Lighting Solutions for Pathways, Exteriors and Entrances

If the only light at an entrance is a security light, not only is it unfriendly and glaring, but also it makes visitors feel like trespassers. Framing the door with two wall lights, traditional or modern, or an overhead lantern – ideally slightly dimmed to take the edge off the glare – makes a far more welcoming approach. In a country setting, without the additional lighting from surrounding streets, this may not provide enough light. In this case, a soft uplight to planting, filtering dappled light across the sides of the building, will soften the starkness of the effect, although it will appear as if the wall lights are doing the work. Lighting the side of a building is a good way of creating some general light. Another way of emphasizing an entrance, if wall lights are inappropriate, is with recessed uplights close to the architrave of the door to emphasize this or to uplight a pair of plants either side.

Having established the lighting of the entrance, the next thing to think of is the approach. Lighting steps is important from a safety point of view. If the steps have sides, then a discreet light can be set into the wall to skim across each step, using a fitting with the lamp set deeply within it and either an LED or low-voltage halogen light source with a lens to direct the light and ensure minimal glare. Another way to light steps is with spiked spotlights. Once again, the best results are achieve when the light source is concealed, either by the surrounding planting or by using a fitting in which the lamp is set well back.
Floodlighting an exterior can be a way of enhancing an approach, also creating reflected light to illuminate a terrace. Avoid the standard approach of floodlights offset from the building by several metres and directed towards it, as not only will this create glare affecting anyone looking out of the building, but it will also flatten any architectural details – whether a column, window surround or old textured stone facade. A subtle balance is required, because if the lighting is too close to the building it will emphasize any imperfections on the surface. Any light set into the ground will need some form of glare shielding, usually a honeycomb filter or a louver.
It is not essential to light paths uniformly, but usually just as changes of directions or every 10-15m. Shielded fixtures set 400 – 600 mm above the ground with the light directed towards the path are ideal. The light may be those set in one direction or the old-fashioned mushroom lights, which provide a soft 360-degree light over all surrounding low-level planting and the pathway. In each case, both the light source and the light fitting should be concealed amongst planting. If there are no plants, other solutions can be explored, such as setting light into a large stone ball to graze against the gravel, or selecting a large freestanding floor lantern and concealing a light source at the top so that the light floods out across the path.

Thinking of Background Lighting For Your Room Design

When deciding on the most appropriate solution for a room’s background lighting, think about its main uses and the task that will be performed there, then decide how best to achieve the general light. In a living space, for example, the background light may be provided by a chandelier, lamps and wall lights; in a utility room, it could be uplighting or LED downlight, or a combination of these. Various effects can be achieved when chandeliers or decorative lamps are used as the general light. For example, a chandelier with exposed lamps will create a totally different effect to one with diffusing shades.

If using down lights to achieve background light in a kitchen, bathroom or corridor, try to arrange them so that they relate to the layout of the space and are not necessarily laid out in a grid formation. While the latter will give totally even illumination, this can make a space feel more like an office than a home. In addition, most people have to stand or walk directly under a light, as it can cast an uncomfortable shadow. A better solution is to create some reflected light by directing the down lights towards the walls or cupboards so that the light reflects off the surface. This ‘wall washing’ will result in a far softer effect.
When using down lights for general light in this way, bear in mind that their effect will be strongly governed by whatever they are lighting. If the walls or floor are dark, then the reflected light will be much reduced. If the ceiling is the only light colour in the room, then uplight this. It is important to recognize that the colour and reflectance of the walls in an interior play an important part in how light is affected. In an totally white space, the reflectance is at its greatest, and the amount of light required to make the room seem bright will be comparatively less than in a dark timber or painted room in which light is absorbed and litter is reflected. A simple way to test this theory is to hold a piece of white card under a downlight, then a black or dark-coloured card, and observe the difference in reflection on the ceiling.
Uplight is a form of background light that is much softer than direct downlight. This can be from a freestanding floor uplihgt, a wall-mounted uplight or a linear fitting concealed above a cove in the ceiling or above cupboards. It provides an excellent basis for general light because it is soft and diffuse, with few sharp shadows, so that any accent light punched through it immediately creates contrast. The same rules apply: a white ceiling offers the best reflectance, but a matt surface is preferable to a shiny one. A shiny surface will reflect the light source itself, which will look unsightly, and the even wash, described above, will not be achieved.

Some Tips for Using LED Lights Better-----Layering Light

‘Layering’ may seem an unusual term to use in relation to lighting, but, in the same way as an interior designer builds up layers of colour, texture and finishes to achieve the final scheme, a lighting designer plays with a combination of different lighting effects, selecting each one to fulfil a practical need or to create a specific visual impact and different play of light and shadow.

Good layering is built up of many different light effects, each introduced at different levels or positions. For example, if there is a pendant in the room at one level, try to introduce an uplight or a low-level floor washer and mid-level light, which could be a wall light, a lit bookshelf or lit picture. Make sure that each of these types of light can be controlled independently, so that different moods can easily be achieved by altering their intension.
Layers of light are built up by considering the different types of background lighting, task lighting and feature lighting. Decide on the effects you would like to employ to produce these – wall washing, floor washing, downlighting, uplighting, for instance – and use them in different proportions and intensities depending on the balance required in the room. Bear in mind that in one situation the light effect may be a background light, but used with a different source it can provide a more direct light and become an accent light. For example:
  1. Light should be introduced from different directions. If the general lighting is uplighting, providing a soft diffuse effect reflecting light off the ceiling, try to use a specific downlight for the accent light, whether this is focusing on a table or piece of art. Then use a localized lamp to add a soft infill light at mid level.
  2. Another contrasting solution would be to use recessed down lights for a wall-washing effect to create reflected light off the walls as background light, then to add recessed narrow-beam uplights to pick out some of the features and provide accent lighting. In the instance, with the majority of the lighting focused around the walls, a chandelier or narrow-beam downlight could be used to create a central focus.
  3. If the background lighting in a room is provided by freestanding decorative lamps, then the feature lighting may be a combination of narrow-beam uplights used to define architectural features and low-voltage down lights to highlight pictures or create a focus in the centre of the room.

A Guide to Buying Flexible LED Strip Lights

Recently, flexible LED strip lights are becoming increasingly popular on the market.
To pick the suitable LED strip lights you need, you had better take the following factors into account:
- The type of LED chip included
- The number of LED chips per meter
- The colors of the LEDs
- Waterproof of the strip

There are mainly two types of LED strips:

1. 3528’s
2. 5050’s

1. 3528’s

Buy-strips-1-3528
The number “3528” indicates that the dimension of the LED chip included is 3.5mm*2.8mm. 3528 LED strip lights are less bright, thus suitable for producing ambient light.

2. 5050’s

Buy-strips-2-5050
Obviously, the dimension of 5050 LED chip is 5mm by 5mm. 5050 LED strip lights are more brighter than 3528 strips.

The number of the LED chips per meter

Another important elements to be considered when buying flexible LED strip lights is the number of LED chips in the strip per meter. In general, the larger the number is , the brighter light the strip produces.

Colors

Buy-strips-3
Almost all colors of LEDs are available now, because any color could be created with RGB technique.

Waterproof of the strip

There are mainly 4 options of waterproofing: non-waterproof, gel coating, hollow plastic sleeving and plastic sleeving with gel filling.
Buy-strips-4
Buy-strips-5
If you are going to install strips in area which is dusty and wet such as bathrooms and kitchens, then you had better choose gel coating strip lights.
Hollow plastic sleeving and plastic sleeving with gel filling strip lights are necessary for areas which have heavy water flow.
